The first construction specific taxation scheme was introduced in 1972 and there have been several versions over the years. This led to the creation of the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) in August 1999. Reforms to CIS in April 2007 increased emphasis on compliance and a new compulsion to “consider” employment status. CIS only applies to the Construction Industry and only applies to self-employed Subcontractors and Contractors in the UK.
