International Mandela Day

Launched in 2009 to celebrate Nelson ‘Madiba’ Mandela’s birthday, Nelson Mandela International Day celebrates the life and legacy of Mandela and aims to bring around enduring change.

There is much we can learn from this inspirational man, and here at Green Lantern we’re reminding ourselves today how some of his words can inspire us in business and help us channel our inner Mandela:

  1. “Vision without action is just a dream, action without vision just passes the time, and vision with action can change the world.”

We believe this quote is an excellent reminder to stay focused on our aims and keep mindful that whilst the whirlwind of being busy can fool us into thinking we are achieving something, actually we are going nowhere.  It’s a perfect prompt to evaluate our decisions and how we spend our time, and ensure our actions are bringing us closer to achieving our vision and therefore dreams.

  1. “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

We think this is our favourite Mandela quote and a perfect inspiration to think big and give ourselves permission to exceed our expectations of ourselves.  How can we reach higher than ever before and keep pushing ourselves to be the best we can be?

  1. “Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front.”

Mandela described being a leader akin to a shepherd, “He stays behind the flock, letting the nimblest go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.” A good leader demonstrates humility—letting others shine and feel their value beyond measure.  We believe this can create a culture of supportive growth and push ourselves and our business to a higher level than before.

  1. I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.”

Our work is never done; we can always do better. Reach higher. Go farther. Sometimes it feels like we haven’t accomplished anything at all. It’s important to stop and celebrate those small successes and milestones and take in the view along the uphill climb, if we keep moving forward. Remind yourself how far you have come as you look at the road ahead.

  1. “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

We are all at times guilty of not believing in ourselves.  How often do we think we can’t do it, the task ahead is too much for us, or that our goals exceed our capabilities? When we remember this quote, we realise that we’ve thought this before, we’ve achieved much more than we thought we could, and if we keep positive, we can achieve what we didn’t think we could.

  1. Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again”

This one is a reminder to us that whilst its human nature to only see successes when we look at others everyone encounters struggles and has their own story and battle scars.  True character is shown in getting back up after every failure and this is how we can inspire ourselves to keep going.

We will spend today thinking about how the great Nelson Mandela can inspire us to be our best selves everyday. If you’d like to share some thoughts with us, or if we can be of any assistance, please contact us on 02071642116.
