Get To Know Green Lantern Gemma Rowley
What have been the highlights in your career journey that have enabled you to sit where you are today?
After being out of work for a few years due to becoming a mother I then decided to utilize my existing skills by going back to college. In that time I achieved 5 new qualifications as well as an adult learner’s award in the achievement category. This was indeed a proud moment after the hard work I had put in to achieve this is such a small period of time. I then moved on to become a volunteer for just over a year at the college I studied at. This was a fantastic opportunity I valued greatly which helped me to get back into the working industry and strengthen my abilities. Over the past few years I have learnt a number of new skills I have brought to my current role. I would say because of those skills I have learnt along the way has most certainly enabled me to be sat where I am today. I am more confident, self-motivated and versatile now then I have ever been before, which are essential skills for my profession at Green Lantern.
What motivates you and drives you?
When it comes to motivation I would have to say there is nothing more in life that drives me then my child. She motivates me to get my act together and take life seriously, inspires me to pursue a well-paying and emotionally fulfilling career and build a better life for us. It is thanks to my child I will always continue to stay motivated and strive to be the best I can be.
How do you know when you’ve done a good job, what gives you satisfaction?
When it comes to learning new tasks and skills making sure the job is done not only correctly but perfect each time is something I aim for and gives me great satisfaction. We work in a fast paced environment therefore every job needs to be completed to the best of my ability. Recognition of my effort also reminds me I am doing a great job as well as motivates me for future tasks.
Who inspires you?
I consider Emma Watson a national treasure in my eyes. Although she is best known for playing the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, Watson is doing her best to become one of the foremost celebrity faces of feminism in the world. We should have guessed she would be aspiring to do great things when Watson was named a Goodwill Ambassador by UN Women, but “great things” is an understatement for the powerful speech that Watson made for the HeForShe Campaign . Her speech was all about gender and equality, issues that still don’t receive enough attention (and often negative attention when they do), and it was 10 minutes of pure, unadulterated awesome. Overall she is a great inspiration to women of all ages we can look up to and learn a great deal from.
Why does Green Lantern matter to you?
Green Lantern gives me a sense of importance and belonging. To me, I belong here and feel I help to make a difference in helping this company to grow and develop. I enjoy and thrive on learning new skills and Green Lantern certainly helps me to achieve this. I have a great relationship of trust with every member of staff and feel my relationships with each of my co-workers are equally respectful, regardless of job titles or levels of educational preparation. Green Lantern has become a part of my life in the time I have been here will continue to look forward to the new tasks and challenges it has to offer.
